ScoutWx has no accounts and collects no personal information. Your location stays on your device. Your settings and saved locations stay on your device. We don’t sell anything about you, because we don’t have anything about you to sell.

ScoutWx is made by Drake Apps, LLC (“we”), which also runs Dank Weather. This policy covers the ScoutWx app for iPhone and iPad and this website. ScoutWx reads its weather data from the same servers as Dank Weather, and this policy follows Dank Weather’s privacy policy, narrowed to what ScoutWx does: ScoutWx has none of Dank Weather’s accounts, sensors or push notifications.

What the app sends

ScoutWx shows public weather data. To fetch the part you’re looking at, it sends these requests to our servers at api.dankweather.com, tiles.dankweather.com and ws.dankweather.com:

The area of the map in view
A latitude and longitude box, to find the weather stations, NWS alerts and lightning in view.
The map tiles in view
For the radar, satellite or forecast you picked. The same tiles are served to everyone.
A point you press and hold
Its latitude and longitude and the frame on screen, to read the radar, satellite or forecast value there.
What you’ve picked
The radar, product, forecast model and run, the stations in view and the zones of the alerts in view, to fetch public data about them.

None of these carry an account, a name, a device identifier or any other identifier, and we don’t keep them with anything that identifies you. They are answered and forgotten, apart from the server logs below.

What stays on your device

  • Your location. ScoutWx asks for your location only while you’re using it, to center the map and pick the nearest radar. It never leaves your device. You can turn it off in Settings at any time and pick a radar yourself.
  • Saved locations and settings. Kept on your device, and removed when you delete the app.
  • Map data. Tiles, alert zone shapes and other public data the app downloads are cached on your device so it doesn’t fetch them twice.

Server logs

Requests to our servers and to this website pass through Cloudflare. Our servers log them in standard web logs: the IP address, the user agent (which names the app and the iOS version), the request’s path and Cloudflare’s geolocation headers (country, region and city). For map requests the path includes the area or point asked for. The logs are kept on a rolling window for debugging and abuse detection, and may be used in aggregate to understand usage, such as how often a product is viewed. They aren’t linked to an account (there are none), they aren’t sold, and they aren’t used to track you.

This website

scoutwx.com sets no cookies, runs no analytics or tracking scripts and has no forms. Cloudflare hosts it and processes your IP address to serve and protect it.

Service providers

  • Cloudflare hosts this website and sits in front of our servers, for content delivery, security and geolocation headers.
  • Apple provides the base map (MapKit) and the App Store. Map requests go from your device to Apple under Apple’s privacy policy. If you’ve chosen to share analytics with app developers in iOS Settings, Apple sends us crash reports and usage statistics without identifying you.

The agencies whose data ScoutWx shows (NOAA and the National Weather Service, EUMETNET OPERA, ECMWF, Deutscher Wetterdienst and Environment and Climate Change Canada) receive nothing from you: our servers fetch their data.

Data retention

We hold no personal information about ScoutWx users beyond the server logs, which are kept on a rolling window suitable for debugging and abuse detection. What the app keeps on your device stays there until you delete the app.

Your rights

You may ask for access to, or deletion of, any personal information we hold about you, which for ScoutWx is at most the server logs. Email james@drakeapps.com.

European Union and United Kingdom (GDPR). If you are in the EU, the UK or another GDPR jurisdiction, you also have the rights to rectification, erasure, restriction of processing, data portability and to object to processing. You may also lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.

California (CCPA). If you are a California resident, you have the right to know what personal information we collect, to request its deletion and to opt out of its sale. We do not sell personal information.

Children’s privacy

ScoutWx is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has given us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.

Security

Everything the app sends goes over HTTPS. No security measure is perfect, and we cannot guarantee that no incident will ever occur.

International data transfers

Our servers are in the United States. By using ScoutWx from outside the United States, you consent to your requests being processed there.

Law enforcement and legal process

We may disclose information, which for ScoutWx means server logs, when we believe in good faith that the law or legal process requires it, or that it is needed to protect the rights, property or safety of Drake Apps, our users or the public.

Business transfers

If Drake Apps or ScoutWx is involved in a merger, acquisition or sale of assets, information we hold may be transferred as part of that transaction. We will give notice and a meaningful choice about your information where the law requires it.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy. The effective date at the top reflects the latest revision. If ScoutWx ever starts collecting information about you, we will update this policy and the app’s App Store privacy label before that version is released.
